PlasmaChem GmbH - The Past, Present and Future
PlasmaChem GmbH was founded at 1993 in Mainz. In 2005 company moved to Berlin, the capital of Germany with location at Adlershof - the "City of Science and Media" - the Federal German Technology Park.

The main area of company concerns to the nano-materials, detonation-, vacuum-, plasma- and ultra-thin film technologies and their biomedical and technical applications.

The general manager and main owner of Plasmachem GmbH - Dr. Alexey Kalachev (author of more than 100 papers and patents) - has spent over 15 years in Academy of Science of USSR (presently Russian Academy of Science) working in above mentioned areas.

Dr. Alexey KalachevIn Germany he was working since 1990 in Max-Planck-Institute of Polymer Research, Mainz University, Institute of Micro-Technology (Mainz) and Humboldt University of Berlin. With these and others famous German research centres PlasmaChem GmbH supports close relationships through the several joint R&D projects.

Especially close cooperation is developed with Humboldt University of Berlin (Chair Physics of Macromolecules, Prof. J.P. Rabe) also located at Adlershof/Berlin, where PlasmaChem has own research facilities and provides measurements of modified surfaces and nano-objects using different analysis methods, first of all Scanning Probe Technique (AFM/STM/STS). Together with Humboldt University of Berlin PlasmaChem has developed new approach for arrangement of the polymers including polynucleotides (DNA, RNA) on atomically flat surfaces to get proper molecular DNA-Chip for direct nanoscopic sequencing of genome. Patent application was filed for this development.

The main technology points of PlasmaChem concern to the development of processes, induced by low temperature plasma on different surfaces and in organized mono-molecular films (Langmuir-Blodgett and Self-Assembly Films), in atomically flat inorganic solids and in liquid interfaces.

PlasmaChem is originator of several successfully performed national German and European (Brussels) projects.

Since 1998 PlasmaChem GmbH began to produce new patented cardio-implants (BioDiamond) of unique design and properties, with biocompatible nano-layered Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC)-coating which serves also as effective barrier against leakage of heavy metal ions (such as ions of Cr, Ni, Mo) from surgical stainless steel 316L. In pipe PlasmaChem has new generations of cardio- and surgical implants - implants with controlled drug eluting and biosoluble (biodegradable) temporary implants.

In area of medical devices PlasmaChem GmbH developed also new contact lenses of long wear (over 90 days/nights permanent wear). In 2004 new company together with Bayer Chemistry Park (Leverkusen, Germany) was founded for manufacturing and promotion of these products.

The second important business line is production and sale of new industrial products - Nanopowders (NanoDiamonds, NanoCeramics, NanoMetals and composite Nano-particles - Nano-capsules). In 2005 PlasmaChem has launched first in the world General Catalogue on Nanomaterials and related products.

Plasmachem performs chemical and low temperature plasma modification of nanopowders with purpose of functionalization of nano-particle's surface with assistance of new plasma chemical method developed by PlasmaChem for ultra-dispersed materials. This approach gives new family of industrial nano-products with improved tailored properties.

Along with new nano-particles PlasmaChem developed new ready-to-use industrial nano-products like nano-abrasives, additives to engine oils and composite nano-suspensions for electroplating and electroless plating of metals. Contract with Siemens AG on this issue is already concluded.

PlasmaChem GmbH development of new surface analytical method - NanoLuminograph. The R&D phase is completed. 2 patent applications were filed and granted already at national phase. First commercial prototype is under construction.
